Dr. Eun-Sil (Shelley) Hwang is Associate Professor in Residence in the Department of Surgery at UCSF Mount Zion Hospital, specializing in total skin-sparing mastectomy and other techniques to preserve the appearance of the breast after cancer surgery.
Dr. Hwang is involved in several studies examining the effects of hormone replacement therapy, gene labeling, and the improvement of quality of care by tailoring treatment and customizing risk assessment. She is the principle investigator in a study to determine whether pre-operative hormonal therapy will reduce tumor volume in post-menopausal women. She has authored numerous articles and has presented her research at many national and international symposiums.
Dr. Hwang works closely with students in the Breast Fellowship Program, and other residents and interns in the Breast Care Center of Excellence. She has taught several labs and workshops, and is involved in the residency training on a daily basis.
She received both of her undergraduate degrees Magna Cum Laude from University of California Los Angeles, where she also received her medical degree. After completing her residency at New York General Hospital under Cornell University, she completed her fellowship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She served as Senior Registrar at Singapore General Hospital in Singapore before receiving her MPH from UC Berkeley in Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
Dr. Hwang resides in Marin with her husband and three children.
