Biography

Dr. Julio Garcia-Aguilar, a native of Spain, is a surgeon specializing in colon and rectal surgery. His areas of expertise also include the treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease and pelvic floor disorders. Garcia-Aguilar earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Madrid. After completing his residency in Spain, he performed a general surgery residency at Harvard's Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, where he spent two years conducting basic research at Harvard Medical School's Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

He completed an advanced fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the University of Minnesota and was appointed an associate professor of surgery at San Carlos University Hospital in Madrid. He joined the surgery faculty of the University of Minnesota in 1996 and then joined UCSF Medical Center in 2002 as Chief of the colon and rectal surgery section and a professor of surgery. In July 2007, Dr. Garcia-Aguilar was appointed Surgeon-in-Chief of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Garcia-Aguilar lives in San Francisco with his wife, Elsa, and his two sons, Martin and Jaime.
