Biography

Dr. Michael Alvarado is Assistant Professor of Surgery at UCSF Mount Zion Hospital and Surgeon at San Francisco General Hospital.   He specializes in the treatment of breast cancer and melanoma.   He is certified by the American Board of Surgery, and is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American College of Surgeons.    

Dr. Alvarado received his undergraduate degree from Arizona State University, his master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Arizona and his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School.   After completing his residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, he completed his surgical oncology fellowship at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute at the University of South Florida.   There he conducted research in the Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology on comparative gene expression profiling of stage III colon cancer and sentinel lymph node biopsy for patients undergoing mastectomy.    

Dr. Alvarado joined the Breast Oncology Program at the Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center at the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center in July, 2006.   He works closely with students in the Breast Fellowship Program, and other fellows and residents at San Francisco General Hospital.   He has taught several labs and workshops, and is involved in the residency training on a daily basis.    

Dr. Alvarado is an integral part of the patient-centered interdisciplinary breast team and the Breast Oncology Program.   He currently heads partial breast irradiation trials and investigates blood-based and molecular markers to improve breast cancer screening.
